in 971 submitted a tender for 86 6-axle diesel electric hood locomotives that could produce at least 2000hp for use on busier non-electrified lines and would be used primarily for freight service the locomotives typically worked in pairs but some did operate single when handling local pickup-dropoff freight and they proved to be good locomotives (although they had an issue with the Turbochargers catching fire which meant they often were not used on hazmat) the classes they were intended to replace were the Classes: 40, 31, 34, and 18
