<Prologue of the Secret Shadow> Lia.... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I rushed to my room to wake Zane up. Miss Anderson had crossed the limits! I wasn't staying there at all. Someone was thumping at the door. I looked around. Everyone was asleep. I slowly crawled over to Zane's place. "Zane! Wake up! She is here!", I whispered as I lifted him up. He wasn't that heavy but I had to carry Laura and I possibly couldn't carry two 8 year-olds when I myself was just 9. "Open the door! You know it's your duty, boys!", She said. I sighed. Zane opened his eyes and they met mine. I put him down and immediately rushed to the emergency exit. It was a barred window. I took out the screwdriver I had in my shoe and slowly, removed the bars. Then, excitement caught up with me. I wanted to teach her a lesson. For everything she had done to Laura, To Zane, and To the girl who was still locked in for a minor mistake. I set the bars against the door and screwed them up. It took immense effort but it was worth it. The other kids could have their beauty sleep. "Blow! Get in gear, Laura has been locked in the room!", Zane said as he came rushing to me. I stood up in shock. "What is the time?", I asked as I looked at the window to my escape. "9:15", came the prompt answer. "Oh no!", I muttered as I walked over to the window. Zane tied the rope to the bed post. I swung on it and managed to reach the girls' room. The mysterious girl was on the floor, sitting and just about to daze off. "Some help?", I asked as I pushed my feet from the wall to keep myself in a stable position. "Just get Laura and we are off!", Zane whispered from behind. I got in with Laura's help and immediately tied the rope to her waist after untying it from mine. I told her the plan and what change was there in it and she put in a suggestion or two maybe. I nodded and she jumped out swinging to Zane. "What are you doing here?", The girl shrieked. "Helping you", I replied chuckling. "For the first time in like...forever, you said something", she replied chuckling. I rolled my eyes. "We wait till the dark. Until then, do you have a rope?", I asked her as I picked the lock of the room and sneacked a look outside. "Everything clear. Target is sitting facing this very door and she saw the door opening!", I said urgently as I backed away. "Right. Leave this to me, shadow", she said, a crafty look glittering in her eyes. I stared at her. Yeah, you are a problem", she said as she looked at me. She waited a second and then suddenly pushed me into a closet. "Ouch!", I whispered. I heard her giggle for a second and then suddenly stop. I backed away. Mrs Anderson was certainly going to check the closet. I had an idea. I locked the door with a small wooden piece and some screws I had in my pocket from the morning. the door wasn't even tried open. I backed away to trip and fall. It was on a rope. yes, a rope! Finally. "Hey, shadow! Have you disappeared now?", The girl's clear voice sounded outside. "Yes, wait a second for the grand entry!", I said as I immediately opened up the screws and walked out, the rope dangling from my waist. She laughed. It was a sunny afternoon and we talked a lot. "It was a trapdoor. I knew all about it.", She had said when I told her about the rope. "Let's go, girl!", I said as I saw the sky turn cloudy. "I am Lia. Call me that.", She said as she glared at me. "What did I do?", I asked confused. "You..referred to me as 'the girl', which I find offensive", she replied scornfully.I tied the rope to my waist. "Sure, now for the grand escape.", I said and smirked."Can you carry me?", She asked as she looked at me questioningly. I blushed a bit. "Well, yeah if you are fine with it.", I answered looking around trying to avoid eye contact. I took her in my hands and slowly began to descend. As soon as I reached the bottom, She cut the rope as planned. I then raced with her to the cafe where we were allowed to go once in a blue moon. "Zane!", I called out as I saw him working as a waiter. "What?", He asked as he walked with a menu towards a nearby table. I took his wrist. "You are not working! We have to run away!", I said as I released my grip. Lia looked at me horrified. "What was that about?", She asked as she backed away. "Excuse me, madam", a tiny voice said as she bumped into someone. It was Laura. I held my face in my hands. When would my siblings understand the value of time? Anyways, that day we somehow managed to run away and I dropped off Lia at a small quite corner. That was the last I saw of her until.......
