☂︎ Today, February 21, marks the 108 anniversary of the Battle of Verdun. The battle of Verdun began on February 21, when the Germany 5th Army attacked the region of Verdun, heavily fortified by the french forces. After resisting, both sides were almost at complete standstill, but continued charges and skirmishes would not let either side breath a sigh of relief. The battle was the longest of the First World war, lasting about ten whole months. In the end, the brilliant German offensive was defeated by an equally brilliant French offensive. The battle officially ended in December, when winter conditions made further offensives virtually impossible for either side. By the end of the bloody conflict, nearly 700,000 lay dead in the fields of Verdun. Let us not forget these valiant sacrifices. ☂︎
