Art Process! Explained… interestingly. If you were wondering from my profile, a flautist is a flute player. So, I decided to draw my persona playing a flute! :) 1: Thumbnail, just skip over this page. 2: My sketch! Isn’t it lovely? Trick question. It’s… messy, to say the least. In my opinion, sketches aren’t supposed to look nice. Sketches are a first draft, a rough, blocking-in of some of the more important shapes. Their purpose is simply to give you a vague idea of the form of your character. 3: Line Art. When I put down my line art, I always start with black, but afterwords I color each “part” of it to represent the color I plan to use in that spot later on. In my opinion, this gives the finished project a soft, clean look compared to rougher blacks. However, in some circumstances, I do prefer using black outlines. Such as on Jade’s flute. 4: When I color, in most cases I stick to the base and texture, leaving out shadows until later. However, as you can see on the jacket, some parts I shade in with the color. 5: Shadows! I absolutely LOVE shading, it gives the subject a depth hard to obtain by any other means. When I shade, I use dark colors, almost NEVER black, because black usually makes the whole piece seem too sharp or disorganized. I also put the layer to about 50% opacity, and the setting to Overlay. 6: Lighting is even more fun than shading! I follow similar rules when designing the lighting as to the shadows. I never use white. White, like black, is usually much too sharp and bright for my art style, so I tend to stick with lighter colors. I then put the opacity to 50-75% and the setting to Add. 7: I tend to stick to pretty simple backgrounds. I choose three colors and blur them together, on top of which I add a bunch of shapes in yet another color. In this specific piece, I added a floor line, but usually I don’t. 8: And there you have it! The finished product! I hope you enjoyed this little project as much as I did making it!
