It's time to show off some more insects I love! Press space, right arrow, or click to see pictures! Meet these two beautiful moths- the Rosy Maple Moth (Dryocampa rubicunda) and the Luna Moth (Actias luna). Let's start with Rosy! Rosy Maple Moths, as the name imply, love maple trees. Eggs are laid on one so the youngsters can feed on the leaves when they hatch. They also pupate on the same tree- most of their life is spent on just one! When they emerge as the colorful yellow and pink adults, they're free to fly around, looking for a partner. Males have super bushy antennae to find females. Sadly, adults don't feed. Ignore the artwork- they don't have mouths! Next is the Luna Moth. While the Rosy Maple is very tiny, Luna moths are very large. They're one of the largest species in North America! Their eggs, like the Rosy's, are laid on the underside of leaves. However, when the time comes, the green larvae turn brownish and descend to the ground to pupate, blending in with the leaf litter. The wing color of the adults changes depending on where they are, but only by a little! They have multiple generations a year. Both species live in North America and are known as silk moths. These fluffy honkers must be adored! In general, amazing insects! Thank you for reading!
