Ashton: Another day of school. Another day of having to write down every thought I have on my phone or on paper. But today is different. There's a new kid at school. He's standing in front of the class, having a quiet conversation with our teacher, Mr. Maize. I'm half surprised to see him signing along with speaking. I shrug. I guess it's none of my business. But I can't help but let my gaze linger on their conversation for a few more seconds. Colin: I can feel his gaze. I saw him the moment I walked into the classroom, his eyes slowly following me. I pause my conversation with Mr. Maize to glance back at him. He's writing on a piece of notebook paper. Mr. Maize notices my gaze. "That's Ashton." He signs, as well as speaks, since I have my hearing aid in. "He's mute." My mouth forms an 'o'. "Really?" I've never really met someone that's even mildly like me."
