headspace - a place where everything could be like it was when they were still children. a lot of things from sunny's childhood are there, like humphrey, the big yellow cat, captain spaceboy, etc. everyone is happy. he gave mari a bad knee so she stays at her picnics and doesn't get hurt. he doesn't want real life to repeat. blackspace - everything he's been repressing goes here. all of his bad thoughts. the creations that he'd rather not think about. i don't think all of the basil deaths are because sunny dislikes basil. i think he feels guilty. sunny killed his sister, all basil did was help him get away with it. he feels like he dragged basil into it, despite basil willingly helping, even bringing up the idea of hanging mari in the first place. however, basil is forever changed by the truth, and sunny might compare that to killing him. in most of the rooms, omori doesn't cause basil's death, and in the one where he does, he didn't do it intentionally. i think sunny blames himself for standing by and letting basil "die" (taking some blame for sunny and helping him cover it up). basil is never shown as spiteful in any of the rooms. he's always nice to omori and remains positive until he's close to death, or even during his death. sunny sees basil as someone who can do no wrong and holds himself accountable for everything that happened to him. omori - an unhealthy coping mechanism. he was created by sunny to help repress his trauma. based on what daddy longlegs said in the lost forest, i think he's also a version of sunny that allows him to actually interact with the things in headspace. he's not evil. he's purely neutral, doing everything he can to continue fulfilling his purpose. sunny - he was just 12 when he pushed mari down the stairs. he couldn't have known the repercussions. at that age, most people haven't experienced something caused directly by them that could change their life in so many ways. it was an impulse. it happened in the moment, and he obviously regretted it after. it's not his fault. he was just a kid. that type of event can change a person a lot. he became more shut off, not wanting to deal with the consequences of his actions and what his friends became because of what he did. he blames himself. he scribbled out the photos in the photo album because he didn't want to remind himself of everything that's happened. he created headspace so the friends he would be interacting with were the younger ones. the ones that were happy and safe. that's what drives a lot of his actions. kel - no, he's not funny dumb burger guy, and no, he's not secretly super depressed. i think of him as the most mentally stable character, but he's certainly not happy all the time. he has flaws, but so does everyone in the game. i feel as though he does do a bit of masking his emotions, but not to the extent some people think. he was able to cope with mari's death and move past it. aubrey - she's not a girlboss just because she bullies basil and has anger issues. honestly, i think she'd be better qualified as a girlfailure, but whatever. she's not evil. she felt as if all of her friends abandoned her when she needed it the most, and because of that, she became angry. with nobody to help her cope, she turned her anger on the world. i think this anger may have been growing within her for some time, considering how bad her home life was. she probably only felt happy with her friends, and now that they were all gone, she had nowhere to go. when she reached out to basil, the person she became friends with before the rest of the group, she found that all of the photos in the album were scribbled out. she was so angry in the moment, and it wasn't as if it was obvious that basil didn't do it, so she automatically blamed him. how could he do this? she trusted him. with no one to depend on, she found new friends. they might not be the best influence, but they do care about her. she just wants to have a place to belong. hero - i genuinely don't know what to say about him. we have some insight into his character but not that much. his (supposed) girlfriend died. that changes a person. kel was fine. that wasn't fair. how could kel just move on? he lashed out at kel. (+)
(-) he'd been bottling up his emotions for so long, and now the bottle was shattered into pieces. kel could never understand what he was going through. he regretted it. that was his brother! how could he do that? he's sorry. most people characterize him as simply a malewife, and yeah sure. he is. but they make his entire character revolve around mari, his love for her, and her death. that's not fair. hero is his own person. i saw a post once talking about how deep hero and mari's bond was. they had stresses too, but had to be strong for the younger people in their group. they were only able to vent to each other, and when mari died, hero had no one. everyone talks about kel hiding his emotions, but what about hero? so much is expected of him. he's supposed to be the perfect child. god forbid he feels anxious about anything. with no one to talk to, he gets worse. so much worse. basil - no. not a soft uwu flower boy. not absolutely deranged. "he was 12, how could his first thought be to hang mari?" children don't usually like to take the blame. as i stated in my sunny section, they were just kids. this had never happened before. they didn't know what the consequences would be. better safe than sorry. children can have dark thoughts, too. it's not surprising that he would think that. anything for sunny, his best friend, to be okay. "he stabbed sunny's eye out" dude he was basically having a panic attack. it was hallucinations. and hes obviously not an uwu soft boy. he has abandonment issues and went through a traumatic experience. he was bullied by aubrey for something he didn't even do. all he wanted was to keep the blame off of sunny. basil had been bullied for years, with nobody to talk to. sunny was his best friend, and then suddenly, he abandoned him. he had nobody to help him cope with what he did. and it can be assumed he and his grandmother had a close relationship. when she died, it was likely the final straw. he had no one. no one at all. mari - . haha stairs .. no thanks! i used to be like that and am still trying to stop the habit of making stairs and hanging jokes. she's a caring older sister but she let her perfectionism take control of her. she likely didn't know that sunny was suffering, or if she did, she probably assumed it wasn't as bad as it actually was. violins are expensive, so she was rightfully enraged when sunny broke it, especially because it was a gift the group had purchased for him. im not doing blacker space because i havent completed all of it yet </3
