Chapter 1: Eve Carter glumly looked out the window and sighed. It was another boring summer day at Prestige Orphanage, where she had lived for almost two years. Her parents had died in a fire when she was eleven. It felt like it was one thousand degrees to Eve, even though it was only about seventy-five. Prestige Orphanage was always very boring and quiet, or too loud and chaotic due to screaming kids or yelling caretakers, and there was no in between. Eve was the oldest orphan there, the second to oldest being almost three years younger than her. Eve was tall for her age, being five foot seven. She had tannish skin with dirty blonde hair. She would wear the same Prestige uniform every day, even though it was very uncomfortable and itchy. Eve wanted to escape the orphanage very badly. She hated boredom. She hated being yelled at by the caretakers. She hated the ugly blue and white uniforms. She hated having to choose between eating the cafeteria’s disgusting food and starving every day. Outside the window, Eve had a good view of the town. It was small, but it was much more exciting than Prestige. It had a bakery, a library, a school, a restaurant, and a few stores. She wished she was allowed to go to other places in the town, but she could only stay at Prestige. Suddenly, Eve had an idea. Eve tiptoed out of her room. It was almost midnight, so everyone was asleep. She tiptoed down the hall, being careful not to wake the caretakers. She quietly opened the door, walked outside the orphanage, and closed it. “Wow,” Eve said to herself. It was the only thing she could say. She was finally seeing the town she had been living in for almost two years. The town was the opposite of the orphanage. There were people of all ages all over the place, and so many things to do! Eve sniffed the midnight air. It had a very pleasant smell. It was freshly baked bread from the bakery. Eve was excited. She had almost forgotten what real food smelled like after going two years without eating any. Eve ran over to the bakery eagerly. She swung open the door, and walked in. There was a tired baker making a batch of muffins inside. “Hello young lady, how can I help you today?” He said with a yawn. “Some bread would be nice,” Eve replied. “Okay, that will be five dollars,” the tired baker replied. “What are dollars?” Eve asked. She had almost forgotten what money was over the years. “Dollars. As in money,” the baker grumped impatiently. Suddenly, Eve remembered what money was! “Oh, funny story! You see, I don't have any money with me. Do you think you could give me some for free?” Eve asked hopefully. “Nice try kid, but that’s not how this works. Stop messing with me, and either buy something or leave!” The baker said rudely. Eve sadly walked out of the bakery. All of the other shops were closed, so she found a bench that she slept on for the rest of the night. It was uncomfortable, but her bed in Prestige wasn’t much better. The next morning, Eve considered trying to get free food from the bakery again, or maybe some new clothes from the clothing store for free, but she assumed it would be the same situation as the previous night. Eve was starving, but she didn’t really care. Eve sighed. She then saw a forest on the edge of town. “I guess a walk would be nice,” Eve thought. She went into the forest, which was very calm and peaceful. After she had been walking for about ten minutes, Eve saw an abandoned house. “It couldn’t hurt to take a small peek inside,” she thought. The closer she got to the house, the more scared and curious she got. Eve cautiously walked onto the porch, took a deep breath, and slowly opened the door. Inside, there was an old woman sitting in a chair.
