Chapter One “GRYFFINDOR!” Kate clapped politely along with the rest of the first-years as the first student was sorted. “So many people!” she laughed to the first-year girl next to her. The girl ignored her. “Olivia Parr!” was called, and the girl went up. There was a moment’s pause. “SLYTHERIN!” yelled the hat, and everyone applauded again. Kate caught her brother’s eye as he sat among the Slytherins and waved to him. Draco waved back, then turned to say something to his two cronies, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle. They sniggered, pointing over at the famous Harry Potter and his friends at the Gryffindor table. “Seriously,” said a boy next to Kate, “Draco Malfoy is the worst.” Kate bit back the angry retort she as prepared to say. “Yeah, just awful,” agreed the girl next to him. “Vincent says he pays them well, though.” Kate whirled around. “Excuse me, do you have to say such mean things about my brother? We’re all Hogwarts students here, supposed to be united.” She added. The boy looked abashed. “Sorry.” He mumbled. “Vincent Crabbe’s my half-brother,” said the girl with him. “So we’re technically siblings. Vivalda Crabbe, pleased to make your acquaintance. And this is my friend Alex Diggory.” “Katherine Malfoy.” Said Katherine, then turned back to the front, just as Vivalda Crabbe’s name was called. Vivalda, her brown hair swishing behind her, jumped up to the platform. “SLYTHERIN!” the hat shouted, and Vivalda, beaming, ran towards the Slytherin table. “Diggory, Alex!” called McGonagall, and Alex with a nod to Kate, walked up to the platform. “RAVENCLAW!” yelled the hat. “Pearce, Noah?” said McGonagall. A brown haired boy pushed his way through the crowd. “GRYFFINDOR!” the hat yelled. “Malfoy, Katherine?” McGonagall asked. Katherine felt her heart beating excitedly. This was it. Her Sorting. She marched up to the platform and sat on the stool, her excitement mounting, waiting… The hat was placed upon her head. “Hmm…” it said, its voice in her ear. “I see… unusual… where…” Katherine held her breath. “HUFFLEPUFF!” the Sorting Hat cried. There was silence in the Great Hall.
