Helen ran through the forest, her heard pounding out of her chest. Footsteps trailed behind, getting closer. She stopped for a quick breather, assuming that the hunters were far behind. She took in a deep breath, trying to cover the tears of pain and remorse that threatened to leak through. Eventually, the tears got the best of her and she crumbled down to the forest floor. “…how could they…” Helen gasped through sobs as the hunters came closer, close enough to see their torches illuminating the forest floor. Helen curled her hands into tight fists, and looked up to the light. She was being filled with rage that she had never felt before. Pure, utter rage. Helen could feel her blood boiling as she stood up and faced the nearest hunter. She would not make another mistake. She would not trust the wrong. She would NOT go back. The past was the past, and cannot be changed. She trusted the wrong person and paid the price. “I…will not go back!” She snarled at the hunter and swiped a stick across his face, knocking him back and darted off. ‘I am free, no one will catch me again, no one can take me away.’ She thought as she sprinted through the forest thicket, blinking away the tears. With one last push, she threw herself into the darkness, letting all her rage wash away like a leaf on a rapid river. ‘I am free…’ she thought as she leaped into the unknown. To be continued...
