(SPOILERS for howl’s moving castle, the sun of neptune, and triple zero below!!) 70 pages of fantasy Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones—pages 229 to 299 Howl disguises himself to go to his mentor’s funeral. Upon his return, he is panicked; the Witch of the Waste has found him. Sophie and Michael anxiously rush outside, also in diguise, to watch Howl and the Witch fight, illusions and magic flashing across the sky. Eventually it appears one or both of them has been defeated in an explosion. Howl is alive when they return to the Castle, however, and he says the Witch isn’t dead, either. Now the Witch knows about one entrance to the Castle, they move Calcipher into the shop in Sophie’s hometown. Howl shows Sophie around the shop and the fields of flowers they’ll be selling. The next few days, Sophie and Michael run the shop, and Howl often sneaks away in the mornings to Wales, presumably to see Miss Angorian. Sophie is discontented, frustrated with Howl and unwilling to go talk to her sisters in this form. Another sign of Howl’s curse shows its face. The next day, the dog turns into his human form once more and begins to talk to Sophie. Miss Angorian shows up, asking questions about her disappeared fiancé, and Sophie, jealous and irate, shoos her out of the Castle. Now guilty, but more frustrated and angry than ever, Sophie watches as Howl, angry himself that she hadn’t told him, takes the spell of Percival. He tells them more about what the Witch did to him. Sophie goes outside with Percival in tow, who begins telling her about Howl and Lettie, and that Howl had been asking Lettie about her, knowing of the spell on her all along. Sophie is really angry now, especially as she finally admits to herself her feelings for (the obnoxious, childish, etc.) Howl. She stomps inside and begins yelling at Howl, and Michael too once he admits he also knew. Howl says he’s been attempting to remove the spell to no avail, since her own magic is too strong. Sophie resolves to leave the following day, but before she can her family (followed by Miss Angorian) enters Howl’s castle and they discuss the past few months, Sophie largely defending Howl from her unimpressed stepmother. Around (read for an hour) Triple Zero by Karen Traviss First we get a short prologue from Fi’s perspective, wherein he tries to keep the mood light for the rest of his squad even as they all bemoan the black armor they were given before a mission to a snow-blanketed planet. Then we cut to years before and the Mandalorian Mercenary and solider Kal Skirata, who had been recruited by Jango Fett to train the young clone soldiers. He meets a squad of them and defends them from the cold and cruel Kaminoans who suggest terminating them for being “defective.” He begins to teach them about Mandalorian culture and gives them each a Mandalorian name. Now the war has begun, and Skirata bargains for a position in the GAR so that he can stay close to this squad—the Null ARCs. Etain is trying her best to keep her troop’s spirits up, to make them understand she cares. Ordo and Jusik and Skirata investigate a bombing. Fi and Omega Squad are sent to extract a target, but they run into trouble when their ship breaks away and the air seal breaks. They have only 20 minutes of air left and scramble to find a solution. Meanwhile, Etain engages the enemy. Two chapters of a booklist book read chapters V and VI from the Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan Hazel introduces Percy to her brother, Nico, who she notes seems surprised to see him, although he quickly hides it. Percy says he thinks he recognizes Nico, but the latter dismisses him. When Frank comes to talk to Percy, Nico suggests Hazel stay so they can talk. Hazel agrees, and tries to get Nico to tell her who Percy is, if he’s like her. He says Percy *isn’t* like her, but he can’t tell her anything more. Hazel is frustrated, but before their conversation continues much further, she slips into a flashback—to her thirteenth birthday, where she is in high spirits thanks to a birthday horseback ride with her best friend, Sammy. She heads home, but hears her mother speaking in a strange, sinister voice. Afraid, she runs back downstairs, into a man who she discovers is her father. She’s angry, hates him since he’s only now showing up after thirteen years of nothing. He tells her happy birthday and hands her a gift, then goes upstairs, where her mother argues with him as he begs her to stay, to let him protect her. She tells Hazel they’re leaving. The flashback ends. Hazel talks with Nico about her fears over returning north. Green tower (read 40 pages of dystopian—tho the book has elements of fantasy too, i feel like it matches dystopian best) Triple Zero by Karen Traviss—pages 229 to 269) Ordo returns to the GAR logistics center and bugs the room where the inside informant transmitted (CONT)
(CONT) their information from. Then, he and Corr swap places. Ordo is frustrated with his new position, but knows acting the part is important. He watches the feed on the bug and becomes suspicious of his ‘superviser’s’ activity. Meanwhile, Skirata and the rest of the crew make a deal with someone who wants to buy the explosives they’ve acquired. They manage to plant trackers on the people who come to negotiate for the supplies. One of the prisoners that Vau supposedly killed shows up to the office. Ordo and Etain wait outside the logistics center and chase the suspect, injuring it. It turns out to be a shapeshifter of a species Etain knows about. Ordo’s ‘superviser,’ Wennen, is also following the shapeshifter after becoming suspicious of the person they’re impersonating. Ordo and Etain capture them both, although the shapeshifter is badly wounded. Crash (do nothing) Speedread for 7 minutes Triple Zero by Karen Traviss Wennen convinces Skirata and the rest of them that she’s on their side; that she lost faith in the Republic once she realized they were using a slave army, one whose members they were willing to abandon. After Skirata warns Obrim about their continued operations, Fi and Sev set out across the Coruscant rooftops. Sev falls, dislocating his left shoulder. Read for 15 minutes Triple Zero by Karen Traviss Etain talks with Skirata about the ‘check’ command, and apologizes to Ordo for using it on him. She acknowledges the position he’s been put in, always been put in, where he’s been taken advantage of. He says that her situation has been worse than his; at least he has been taken in by a father when he wasn’t born to one; she was given away by her parents before she knew them. Skirata talks with Obrim further, and in the midst of their breakfast, recieves a call from the men they met earlier that they’re still interested in his weapons. He meets up with them once more and is forced blindfolded into a speeder. done!! :D
