Dugong Blockshade Common Name: Dugong/sea cow Scientific Name: Dugong dugon Conservation Status: Vulnerable General Info: Dugongs live in the shallow, coastal waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. They are related to manatees, and are commonly called ‘sea cows’ because they spend most of their time grazing sea grass. The only difference between dugongs and manatees is that dugongs have tails that look like a whale’s fluke, whereas manatees have paddle-shaped tails. Fun Fact: Dugongs are thought to have inspired tales of mermaids.
