Jaen stood outside, in the pouring rain. 'The first rain in years.' She couldn't believe it. It hardly rained anywhere on earth anymore. Some sort of disaster happened before she was born that caused, what her gramps called it before he died, "The final days." Jaen was shocked. It was the first time she actually, felt rain. REAL RAIN. She was filled with happiness and pleasure. All at once she started dancing, twirling round, and round and round. "Jaen, you get in here!Your momma needs you again! Don't tell her about the rain!" Jaen's dad yelled the porch of their rusty little shack. Jaen rushed in,and dried off not to giver herself away and make her mom sad, her mom loved the rain the few times she felt it when she was younger. Quickly, so not to keep momma waiting and to miss the rain she ran to momma's room. The rain hit the roof violently, so loud that anyone can hear it, except momma. Momma was deaf. She and Jaen communicated in sign, an old language from the past, but momma might have felt vibrations already. Jaen entered momma and dad's room, grabbing the herbs she got from the kitchen out of her ragged and faded skirt pocket,
quickly grounding the medicine she needed in a little cup. "Drink momma" Jaen signed. Momma smiled and took the cup drinking fast. "Thanks, darling. Now go enjoy the rain." Momma smiled as she signed sadly. She couldn't go outside or leave her bed because her health has been in a decline for years. That's how she lost her hearing. Since there are no doctors anymore, at least not in this part of the wasteland, the duty fell to Jaen to take care of momma. Jaen's dad would, but he can't stay around his wife too long without tearing up. Jaen hugged her momma lightly and signed a thanks before walking out into the rain again. Later that night, when the rain stopped and Jaen finished cooking dinner for her and dad, as they are her dad began to speak. "Jaen, I've been thinking.... With your momma's declining health, what with none of us being a doctor or nuthin' I've decided you me and momma are going to head out for New Chicago." Jaen's mouth fell open. 'How could dad do this? We don't even know if it exists!" Jaen voiced none of it though, for she knew better than to fight with her dad. Instead, she gulped and asked: "When are we leaving?" "Tomorrow."
