[The Woodcarver's Curse] 3 In class, I could barely pay attention. Worrying thoughts about Elaine hovered above my head, keeping the teacher’s lessons away. The bell for recess rang, my sister, Eden and I ran down the stairs to the playground where Elaine and Audrey were already waiting to hang out with us. “Where is Mother?” Eden wondered aloud. Suddenly, a girl from our class came to us. I’ve never really learnt her name, yet. “Hi, Alice and Eden. Miss Ng has told me to inform you that she will not be able to make it to the playground during recess,” the girl said. “Thanks for telling us, Rachel,” Audrey told the girl, whose name had to be Rachel. “Lucky to help,” Rachel said, smiling, and walked off. “Elaine,” I began, “What happened? Why did you send that ‘help’ message in our chat? What’s wrong?” I fired a bunch of questions at her, and she looks completely confused. “What ‘help’ message?” she asked. “Don’t you remember? The one you sent at around 6:45 in the morning,” Eden said (I told her about the message before we went to school that morning). “I didn’t send anything to you guys this morning. In fact, I didn’t even check my phone today!” Elaine protested. I looked from Eden and Audrey to Elaine and back again. What was going on? During lunchtime, Eden, Audrey, and I went to find Mother. When we did, we told her everything that happened at recess. I could tell she was as worried as we were. “Don’t think about this matter any more. Focus on your studies, okay?” Mother said and walked away. But I didn’t listen to her, no matter how hard I try, I couldn’t help it, I had to get to the bottom of this. For Elaine’s safety, for my friends and sister’s feelings, and for myself so that I can prove to myself that I am as good as everyone I’ve ever admired, including my mother.
