Writing excerpt [ Title: The Town of de la Maravilla ] [ from chapter 1 ] /I'm late./ I run down the mountainside, my bare feet pounding on rubble and rock. The chill morning air is crisp, and my hair gets in my face. I know it's unsafe, but I'm in a hurry, because I was supposed to be at Braidie's house fifteen minutes ago. Today the mountain girls were meeting up to weave baskets in prepare for the harvest, where the whole village would come out to the woods and pick pine cones and sugar grass and such. I past several homes before Braidie's came into view. She and the other girls were sitting in a misshapen circle, a few of which I recognized as Elle, Pepper, Isa, and Ada. I panted and came up to them, resting my hands on my knees and leaning over. Braidie looked at me. "You slept in again?" She inquired. I gave her a sheepish grin. Braidie rolled her eyes and laughed, patting the spot next to her. I sat down on the cold rubble rocks that made up her lawn. Elle crawled over on her hands and knees and dropped a pile of straw onto my lap before settling next to me. The group continued chittering about. "I can't believe they are only letting us with one wool dress this year," Elle complained. "Mine gets roughed and battered enough EACH DAY. As if one would last twelve moonlings." She wrinkled her nose. "Besides," Braidie added. "Ada and Dulcie raise plenty o' goats. Why can't we shear 'em into more clothes?" Braidie paused and Pepper shook her head. "But Braidie-" She drawled out. "But what?" Braidie cut in. The two argued. Pepper and Braidie always had contradicting opinions. I zoned the two out and focused on the weaving, which they had forgotten and had dropped the straw on the ground as they waved their hands. Elle said to me quietly, "My ma is thinking about switching houses." I looked at her. Elle had the type of eyes that make your forget what you're about to say. Deep and blue, the color of the sky in the middle of the day. They were wide like a doe's and framed by thick blond lashes. She blinked, and I snapped back to focus. "Really?" I asked. The villagers seldom changed houses; one family shared the same house throughout generations, and newly-weds slept in the back, usually separated by an old cloth hung from the roof. "Where would you move?" Elle considered it. "Most likely to the second layer. Ma says the third's too bustlin' with people day 'n night, at the crack of dawn and peak of dust, trompin' around back and forth and she can't sleep." She paused and snorted softly. I held down I laughed and locked eyes with her before both of us burst out in giggles. Braidie and Pepper stopped bickering and looked towards us. So did the rest of the girls. I noticed everyone was watching and stopped, fumbling around for my straw, embarrassed. When Elle noticed the air was silent, she stopped as well. "So," Braidie said. "Anybody going to Jennie's party?" They continued to chatter about. - - - end, thanks for reading! you can find more on my wattpad, .
