Assalamu Alaykum. Thank you for coming to episode 2 of the 99 Names of Allah Series. The word الْمَلِكُ comes from the root word م-ل-ك which means to own something. The word الْمَلِكُ can mean The king, the sovereign and/or the possessor of power and authority. Allah is the one who created all of us, therefore he possesses or owns us. We are not the owners of our bodies, so we should use them the way He commanded us to. الْمَلِكُ appears 6 times in the Quran. It does not occur as often as the first 2 names of Allah does. Allah SWT says, “I am the King of kings, and the Owner of kings. The hearts of kings are in My Hand: if My slaves obey Me, I turn the hearts of their kings to them with tenderness and mercy; but if My slaves disobey Me, I turn the hearts of their kings to them with wrath and avenge. Therefore, do not occupy yourselves by abusing kings but (rather) pray (to Allah) for their reform, for their reform comes from your own reform.” الْمَلِكُ can be used if we want to praise Allah, by stating that he is self-sufficient and does not need anyone's help. It can also be used for any other cause.
